Conservation Areas
The Secretary of State determines those parts of a planning authority's
area which are designated as conservation areas. Selection is made
on the basis of:
- special architectural or historic interest
- character or appearance which is worth preserving or enhancing.
Grants
A grant or loan towards the cost of a project may be given if the work will make a significant contribution towards preserving or enhancing the character or appearance of a conservation area.
Demolition
A building in a conservation area cannot be demolished without the consent of the appropriate authority:
- The Secretary of State if an applications is made by local planning authorities
- The Local Planning Authority if an application is made by any other body.
Development rights
In a conservation area, a National Park, or an area of outstanding
natural beauty, permitted development rights are restricted. You need
to apply for planning permission for certain types of work which may
not need an application in other areas.
